LOCATION : KAUAI VETERANS MEMORIAL HOSP | Surgery Gen-Major

POSITION STATUS : 1.00 | Permanent

SALARY RANGE : BU10 | HE06

SALARY RATE: $56,712.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES : These positions are located in the Surgery, or Operating/Recovery Room (OR), department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kaua’i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.

The Surgery department provides nursing services for all surgical procedures, provides sterile and sanitary environment for the performance of surgical operations, and proper control of preoperative requisites of the hospital and Medical Staff are properly carried out. Ensures that necessary equipment, instruments and drugs are available to the surgeon. The Recovery Room provides immediate postoperative nursing care for all surgical patients.

This position works in the surgery unit/operating room of the hospital or clinic and assists the Registered Professional Nurses (RPN) on the surgical team by performing a variety of tasks to ensure that necessary pre-operative and post-operative activities are attended to. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Position reports to the RPN (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 59602, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EXPERIENCE AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting where the primary or basic objective was to provide support to a surgical crew. Such experience must have provided knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; setting up instrument trays; applicable hospital/facility/program policies and procedures; and the ability to independently decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments and set up instrument trays; and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate effectively with others in English; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, patients, and others; AND
  • One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting, which provided knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions; sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; procedures for maintenance and care of surgical equipment; and the ability to participate in the activities of the surgical team; maintain records; respond quickly and take appropriate action in emergencies.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent may be substituted for all of the work experience required.

CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) preferred at the time of appointment. Otherwise, the candidate must obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.
